Crack Mould- Make this/Break this

7 Aug

After a lunch break, Gabriella Kuzsel, demonstrated how to make and break a crack mould. A crack mould relies on exact measurements to part the block into two pieces.  The mould maker need not burry the model half way in clay nor plan for keys in the halves. Gabriella created her original model on the plaster wheel and poured mould plaster all around it locking it in a solid chalky brick. Once the plaster was set she trimmed off the excess on the exterior, incised a mould band line, and made indication on the mould at the horizon line. Using a saw she made deep cuts around the mould along the centerline and then inserted metal tabs on which to tap. Once the mould was broken she opened it to reveal the original object and her new precise mould.

It was a great pleasure and honor to spend the day with Gabriella! Check out her website for more information on her work as an artist and designer.

Mould Demo- Simple Mould

7 Aug

Yesterday we had the opportunity to watch master mould maker and Hungarian designer, Gabriella Kuzsel, demonstrate two types of mould making techniques. We started with an introduction to multiple part moulds including an incredible commission mould that took 8 months to complete. Once our group had a feel for what type of moulds one could make we started off with an interesting quick way to make a positive plaster model from a lemon.  For those not acquainted with the process, having a hard model to work from allows the technician to work at their own pace without fear of the original organic object rotting or shifting over time.  Plus the plaster records every detail from the origin object making this a fast and easy way to replicate.
